Should I do weights in Football ?

I play football for my school's team am an OLB, but my team during the summer and spring we workout in the gym with weights. The problem is I love to swim, and everytime I do weights and then hit the water I tend to cramp up. Should I do weights in school or could I play linebacker without weights and like that I wont get cramps when swimming ?
